Rosario Meehan

Rosario Meehan is a highly experienced translation services coordinator with 20-plus years of dedicated service at Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD), where she has been instrumental in bridging communication between the district and its Spanish-speaking community. Throughout her career, Rosario has consistently demonstrated a passion for facilitating clear, accurate communication in both educational and administrative contexts. In her current role, she oversees a comprehensive range of translation and interpretation services. She offers professional development for bilingual staff, facilitating workshops, roundtable sessions and resource development, including the creation of the Spanish Translation Guide, Special Education Translation Guide, and monthly Tips for Translators. Additionally, she manages the district’s Bilingual Translator Information webpage, offering resources that promote standardization and elevate translation quality across CFISD. Beyond her role in translations, Rosario has also served as the coordinator for Spanish public relations at CFISD, directing all communications with Spanish-language media outlets. She has represented the district as a spokesperson for Spanish-language news stations and publications and has been responsible for content on the district’s Spanish website. In 2015, Rosario launched CFISD’s Spanish-language social media accounts, significantly enhancing the district’s ability to engage and support its Spanish-speaking families. She also regularly provides simultaneous interpretation services at districtwide parent meetings and events, helping to foster stronger community connections. A seasoned freelance translator with more than 30 years of experience, Rosario has contributed her talents to numerous educational materials, including the translation of the 12-book series ¿Pueden salir a jugar los santos? (Can the Saints Come Out to Play?) and various children's activities. Rosario’s outstanding contributions have been recognized statewide with multiple Texas School Public Relations Association’s (TSPRA) Best in Category Awards for her entries in Spanish. She has also shared her expertise over the years as a presenter at TSPRA conferences. Rosario holds a Translation Studies Diploma, further reinforcing her commitment to excellence in her field.

Ecuadorian-born, award-winning translator, bilingual communicator and experienced content specialist, Sylvia Puente holds over two decades of expertise in delivering high-quality content across diverse platforms. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she tailors messages and translations, ensuring clarity and engagement across linguistic and cultural lines. Currently serving as a translation services specialist for the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District in Texas, Sylvia supports the translation efforts to produce Spanish-language communications, from translating official content to updating the Spanish website and social media presence. Sylvia also shares her expertise through workshops and roundtables, reinforcing best practices in Spanish communication throughout the district, and provides interpretation services at district events. She has built a robust freelance career through her platform, www.finespanish.com, providing translation and interpretation services across different sectors. Her portfolio includes the localization of websites for technological and manufacturing industries. Her career also includes roles as an editor, online publisher, and site manager for prominent media outlets like Univisión Interactive Media and Bluefin Media. Academically, Sylvia holds a master’s degree in Specialized Translation from Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Spain and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Universidad Central del Ecuador. She also earned an English Proficiency Certificate from Escuela Politécnica del Ejército. An active member of TSPRA, Sylvia is the recipient of multiple Texas School Public Relations Association’s (TSPRA) Best in Category (Spanish) Gold Awards. Her work has also been recognized by the City of Houston and the Vice Presidency of Ecuador. Sylivia is also an active member of the Houston Association of Hispanic Media Professionals.

Giovanna Carriero-Contreras has been a noteworthy leader in the language industry space for the past 30 years, with a particular focus on training and education. Her dynamic leadership as Founder of Cesco Linguistic Services, T360nBeyond, Chair-Elect & Acting Chair of the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE) and in other advocacy and standards development committees, has resulted in groundbreaking achievements. Giovanna played a pivotal role in releasing the AAITE National Code of Ethics for Translators and Interpreters in Education, co-authored The Community Interpreter® International. She is a seasoned trainer, trainer-of-trainers, Chief of the ISO T37/SC5 U.S. Delegation, and member of the SAFE-AI Interpreting Task Force, ASTM F43 Committee on Language Services, ATA Education & Pedagogy Committee, ATA Standards Committee, and ALC Language Access and Advocacy committees. Giovanna has developed and implemented comprehensive interpreter training programs and continues to shape the future of language services training through her work, presentations and publications.

Gabriela Siebach, director of interpreting services at Cesco Linguistic Services and Adjunct Professor at UMass - Amherst, has accumulated more than 15 years of professional experience. Gabriela holds a graduate degree in Spanish translation and interpretation from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey. Gabriela co-chairs the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE) Job Task Analysis Committee, serves on the American Translators Association (ATA) Government Division Leadership Council and Interpretation Profession Advisory Committee, and volunteers on several initiatives of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) Policy, Education & Research Committee. She is also a member of the Carolina Association of Translators and Interpreters (CATI), National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

Participants will gain an understanding of the cognitive processes involved, explore essential strategies for listening and processing information under pressure, and learn practical exercises to begin developing their simultaneous interpreting abilities. This session is ideal for individuals new to simultaneous interpreting or those seeking to solidify their foundational knowledge.
SESSION 2
Deliberate Practice for Simultaneous Interpreters: Practical Tools for Improving Performance
Simultaneous interpreters provide a service that is mentally taxing and requires constant upkeep. Aside from assignment-specific research and preparation, interpreters must regularly practice their simultaneous interpreting techniques to maintain and improve the quality of their renditions. Reflexive practice is a common technique used to enhance any interpreting skills; however, a rubric to evaluate our own performance and a path towards improving deficiencies is essential to level-up one's interpreting. This session will apply deliberate practice principles to enhancing simultaneous interpreting skills and provide a rubric and skill enhancement exercise suggestions.
